I Lost a Loved One in a Fire in Detroit: What Now?

The loss of a loved one in a fire is an extremely difficult experience, and in addition to grieving, there are important steps you may need to take in the days and weeks that follow. First, remember that sudden, unexpected deaths in a fire are typically investigated by the local medical examiner’s or coroner’s office to determine and document the cause and manner of death.

Once authorities have completed their investigation, you’ll need certified copies of the death certificate. In Michigan, a funeral director usually files the death certificate with the local county records office and can order certified copies for you, which are needed for many legal and financial matters.

Contact key agencies and institutions. Notify the Social Security Administration about the death to address potential benefits or prevent overpayments. Inform banks, credit card companies, and other organizations where the deceased held accounts to prevent fraud and begin settling their affairs.

Also, consider seeking support from grief counselors, support groups, or trusted community resources to help navigate both the emotional and practical challenges of this time. For fire-related losses, you may also find help through disaster relief organizations, which can provide support for immediate needs and guidance on recovery resources.

Finally, if your loved one had insurance (including life and homeowner’s or renter’s policies), reach out to those companies to start claims. If you need help managing or reviewing any insurance-related matter, a wrongful death lawyer can help you. You should focus on your emotional recovery and well-being, and a lawyer can handle your case from start to finish.
