What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Michigan
After a multi-vehicle crash in Michigan, the priority should always be safety and medical care. You should check for injuries and call 911 so emergency responders can arrive to assist. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it is important to seek medical evaluation because symptoms such as head pain, neck strain, or internal injuries may not appear immediately.
Once it is safe to do so, you should move to a secure location if possible and wait for law enforcement to arrive. In Michigan, police reports are often important after accidents involving injuries or significant vehicle damage. Officers document the scene, gather statements from drivers and witnesses, and create an official report that insurance companies may later review.
If you are able, document the scene. Take photographs of vehicle damage, roadway conditions, traffic signals, and vehicle positions. Exchanging insurance and contact information with other drivers involved in the crash is another important step.
Michigan follows a no-fault insurance system, which means your own auto insurance policy may cover certain medical expenses and lost wages regardless of who caused the accident. However, determining liability can still matter in serious crashes, particularly when injuries exceed insurance thresholds or when property damage claims are involved.
In the days following the crash, it can also be helpful to keep organized records related to the incident. This may include medical bills, repair estimates, photographs, and notes about any symptoms or missed work. Keep this information together to make it easier to respond to insurance requests and track how the accident has affected your daily life and recovery.
Because multi-vehicle crashes can involve several drivers and insurance companies, the claims process can become complicated. A consultation with a lawyer can help you understand how Michigan’s no-fault laws apply, what benefits may be available, and how to protect your rights while dealing with insurers after a serious accident.
