Romulus, MI — Bicyclist Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run on Wickham Rd

Romulus, MI (May 9, 2026) — Romulus Police are searching for a driver who fled the scene of a devastating collision that left a local man fighting for his life. The incident occurred on Friday, May 8, at approximately 6:37 p.m. in the 8500 block of Wickham Road.

According to investigators and witness statements, a 55-year-old Romulus resident was cycling along Wickham Road when he was struck by a dark gray 2025 Ford Escape traveling southbound. Following the impact, the driver failed to stop or render aid, continuing southbound away from the scene.

The bicyclist sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a nearby trauma center, where he remains in critical condition.

Authorities continue reviewing available details to determine how the incident occurred.

Our thoughts remain with the injured bicyclist as they receive medical care and continue their recovery.

What are the Legal Rights and Protections for Bicyclists in Romulus, MI?

In Michigan, bicyclists are legally considered vulnerable road users and have the same rights to the roadway as motor vehicles, backed by the state’s No-Fault insurance protections. To protect your rights after a crash, you must seek immediate medical attention to document impact-related trauma, preserve your bicycle and gear as physical evidence, and ensure a formal police report is filed to trigger your eligibility for medical benefit coverage.

One of the most important rights for a Michigan cyclist is the ability to receive Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits regardless of who was at fault. If you are struck by a car, your own auto insurance (or that of a resident relative) covers your medical bills and lost wages. In case no such policy exists, you have the right to claim benefits through the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP).

In hit-and-run cases, bicyclists may miss the chance to record a license plate. However, you have the right to a thorough investigation that includes canvassing for local security footage and analyzing paint transfer or debris left at the scene.

A lawyer can use this forensic evidence to identify the fleeing vehicle, transforming a hit-and-run into an actionable case where the driver’s liability insurance can be held responsible for the catastrophic damages caused to the cyclist.

Finally, insurance companies often attempt to blame bicyclists by citing a lack of high-visibility clothing or claiming the cyclist was not far enough to the right of the road. Michigan follows a Modified Comparative Negligence system, meaning you can still recover damages as long as you are 50% or less at fault.

A legal counsel protects you from these victim-blaming tactics by demonstrating that you were operating your bicycle legally, ensuring your compensation is not unfairly reduced by the insurance company’s assertions.
