Livonia, MI — 10-Year-Old Boy Hospitalized After Side-Impact Crash on Five Mile Rd

Livonia, MI (February 25, 2026) — A 10-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital on Monday, February 23, following a two-vehicle collision on Five Mile Road. Emergency medical services responded to the scene at approximately 1:14 p.m. after receiving reports of a passenger-side impact.

First responders found the child conscious, though he was suffering from significant right leg pain consistent with the force of a “T-bone” style impact on the passenger side of the vehicle. Paramedics stabilized the boy at the scene before transporting him to St. Mary Mercy Livonia Hospital for further diagnostic testing and treatment.

The local police department is investigating the circumstances of the crash.

We wish a full and swift recovery for the hurt child.

What Can I Do if My Child is Injured in a Car Accident?

When your child is injured, your primary role is to ensure they receive immediate medical care and to act as their legal representative for insurance claims. Because minors cannot file lawsuits or settle claims on their own in Michigan, a parent or guardian must manage the process, which often involves specific court approvals to ensure the child’s long-term interests are protected.

The first and most critical step is to seek a thorough medical evaluation immediately, even if the child appears stable. Injuries like concussions or internal trauma can be difficult for a child to describe accurately. Prompt medical attention not only protects their health but also creates an official record that directly links the injury to the collision.

You should also monitor your child for emotional distress, as the psychological impact of a crash can require specialized counseling.

Because Michigan is a No-Fault state, you must notify your auto insurance company right away to open a Personal Injury Protection (PIP) claim. This “first-party” claim will cover the medical bills from the hospital and any future rehabilitation treatment. As the parent, you are responsible for keeping a detailed log of all treatments, prescriptions, and even the mileage for trips to the doctor.

If the other driver was at fault, you have the option to file a “third-party” claim on your child’s behalf to seek compensation for their pain and suffering. Since a minor cannot legally sign a contract, you will act as their “next friend” in these legal proceedings.

It is important to avoid accepting any quick settlement offers from the other driver’s insurance company. Once a settlement is eventually reached, Michigan law requires a judge to review it during a Minor’s Settlement Hearing to ensure the agreement is fair and that the funds are placed into a protected account for the child’s future.
