Detroit, MI (December 15, 2025) – A house fire on Detroit’s west side claimed the life of a child and left an adult woman critically injured on December 14. The fire occurred in the 12000 block of Rutherford Street near Greenfield Road, according to the Detroit Fire Department.
Crews received reports of a residential fire with people trapped just before 6:00 a.m. Firefighters responded immediately and arrived within six minutes of the 911 call. Upon arrival, crews found an active fire burning inside the home.
Firefighters entered the house and worked to control the flames. During their search, they located a 7-year-old boy inside the residence. Crews removed the child and transferred him to emergency medical teams at the scene. Paramedics transported him to the nearest hospital. Fire officials stated that the child suffered severe burns and appeared deceased at the scene.
Responders also located an adult woman and a 4-year-old boy. Both were transported to the nearest hospital for treatment. Officials reported that the woman suffered serious injuries and remained in critical condition. The 4-year-old child received treatment for smoke inhalation and did not appear to have life-threatening injuries.
Fire crews remained at the scene to extinguish hot spots and secure the structure. Investigators began examining the home to determine how the fire started. Officials have not released details regarding the cause or whether smoke detectors were present. The investigation remains ongoing.
