What Losses May Families Document After a Fatal Crash in Detroit, MI?
After a fatal crash, surviving family members may need to document several types of losses when reviewing a potential wrongful death claim. Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, these may include final medical expenses, funeral and burial costs, lost income, and certain non-economic losses.
Medical expenses from the period before the person’s death can be documented through hospital records, bills, prescriptions, and other treatment documents. Keeping these records together can help establish the costs associated with the care provided after the crash.
Funeral and burial arrangements can create additional financial obligations. Invoices, receipts, payment records, and other documents related to these services can help preserve information about those expenses.
The financial effects may continue beyond these immediate costs. A person’s death can affect household income and other financial contributions over time. Pay records, tax documents, employment information, and other financial records may help establish the person’s earnings and contributions to the household.
Not every loss can be measured through financial records. Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, a wrongful death claim may also address certain non-economic losses experienced by eligible family members.
Insurance information may also become relevant when reviewing the available options. Policy documents, claim correspondence, and information about the vehicles involved may help identify coverage that could potentially apply after a fatal multi-vehicle crash.
As these losses are documented, keeping related records organized can make the review process easier. Photographs, witness information, medical records, and other documentation from the crash may also help preserve details that could be relevant to a potential claim.
