Detroit, MI — Pedestrian in Critical Condition After Being Struck on Gratiot Ave

Detroit, MI (March 3, 2026) — A woman is fighting for her life following a serious pedestrian accident that occurred on Sunday, March 1, on Detroit’s east side. Detroit Police responded to the scene on Gratiot Avenue near Lappin Road at approximately 6:40 p.m.

Preliminary reports indicate that the woman was struck by a vehicle traveling along the Gratiot corridor. Emergency medical teams arrived quickly and transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle, an adult male, remained at the scene following the impact. Detroit Police officials confirmed that he is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Authorities may release additional information as the investigation continues.

Our thoughts remain with the individuals injured in this incident as they receive medical care and recover.

Options After a Pedestrian Accident in Michigan

Michigan operates under a unique “No-Fault” insurance system, which provides significant protection for pedestrians. Even if you do not own a car or have your own auto insurance, you are entitled to Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits.

These benefits cover 100% of your reasonable and necessary medical expenses for life, as well as a portion of your lost wages and “attendant care” if you require help at home during recovery.

In a pedestrian accident, the law follows a specific “order of priority” to determine who pays your bills. First, your own auto insurance pays. If you don’t have a policy, the insurance of a resident relative pays. If neither applies, the insurance company of the driver who hit you is responsible for your medical benefits.

In case the driver is uninsured, you can seek benefits through the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP). This ensures that every pedestrian injured in Michigan has access to medical coverage regardless of who was at fault.

While PIP covers your bills, you also have the right to file a “Third-Party” lawsuit against the at-fault driver for “pain and suffering.” To do this in Michigan, your injuries must meet a legal threshold known as a “Serious Impairment of Body Function.”

Additionally, Michigan uses a Modified Comparative Fault rule for these lawsuits: you can recover non-economic damages as long as you are 50% or less at fault. If a jury finds a pedestrian was more than 50% responsible for being in the roadway, they are barred from recovering any “pain and suffering” damages, though their medical PIP benefits remain unaffected.
